Chupacabra Canoe has crafted a Lenten challenge that will help you become the man you want to be. The main priority of this Lenten journey is to kindle your relationship with God, make you spiritually fit, and release you from the bonds of our modern lives. The Catholic Canoeists’ Lenten Observance will provide you with a structured schedule to guide you through the 40 days of Lent and prepare you to celebrate Easter.

Lent is a sacred season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, calling Christians to spiritual renewal in preparation for Easter. To guide you on this journey, Chupacabra Canoe has outlined a set of disciplines designed to strengthen your faith and resilience. Throughout Lent, we will send and post regular check-ins to encourage you and provide deeper insight into the sacrifices we are making together. For your convenience, a PDF is attached below (click here)—print it out and keep it as a reference throughout the season.

There are three main focuses of the CC Lenten Observance, each of which requires sacrifice and discipline. The first, of course, is spiritual growth. This section includes a daily devotional prayer, daily rosary, daily scripture reading, and attending either Adoration, Confession, or Stations of the Cross weekly. We have outlined the daily readings—it is up to you to do the rest.

The next discipline pertains to food. Fasting elevates us to a higher purpose and has been religious tradition since the beginning. This challenge will require fasting until 3 p.m. each day (the hour of Christ’s death) and abstaining from processed food, seed oils, sugar, and sweeteners (natural sugar is acceptable), sweet drinks, and alcohol. Lastly, for these 40 days, we will not be purchasing any food outside of groceries.

The final focus of the Catholic Canoeists’ Lenten Observance is to promote our mental and physical health. Although the spiritual and food aspects of this challenge will certainly help, this section is focused on concrete sacrifices we will make daily. This includes exercising five times per week, taking a daily cold plunge or cold shower, limiting phone use to calls and texts only, reading a book daily, and completing an outdoor activity every week (preferably canoeing). The last challenge is to schedule a summer overnight canoe trip with friends, family, or both.

Join the Chupacabra Canoe members in this challenge, become the man you want to be, and rightly prepare for Easter.
