WTH Wednesday – I have a question

A colleague brought this to me and now I can’t help shaking my head. Sitting in a meeting (virtual or in-person) and the meeting emcee asks for questions from those attending. A person raises a hand stating, “I have a question ….”

Yes, we get that. There was a request for questions, you raised your hand, we are expecting a question. There is no need to state the obvious.

You could have a comment, and it is appropriate to state “I have a comment”. Appropriate, sure, but probably still not required.

Thanks for listening.

I have a question, why does this bother you? I find it to be a good filter for the people I probably won’t get along with, so it saves me the time of befriending them.

I am on a quest to make communication intelligent and efficient. I didn’t say it bothered me, just that it’s unnecessary.
For instance, you didn’t need to state you had a question in your comment. It is implied when you use the proper punctuation.
Also,I am not arguing the utility of the statement, it’s not relevant.
