Life Lessons – 2

The Dumber You Appear, The More Help You Will Receive

How could this be? What do you mean by dumb?  Isn’t dumb a little harsh?  Although this gem came to me organically on the fly during a random Sunday afternoon conversation with family gathered around to celebrate my nephew’s birthday party, its roots date back to at least 2023.  This is around the time when I can first remember not getting angry at somebody for something that was completely out of their control.  I remember distinctly where I was, the local United States Post Office, there is a reason it is the birthplace of going postal.  It’s never a surprise if someone walks out the door visibly upset after what was expected to be a quick and painless stop at their friendly local USPS. I’ve witnessed people walking out who won’t hold the door for you even when your hands are completely full. Glad I missed that. Sometimes the fine people behind the counter behave as though you have intentionally interrupted their day when you just want to get your letter or package to the lucky person waiting for it on the other end.  I frequent USPS quite often; a lot of postal employees are helpful and can be a delight if you’re willing to ask about their day and engage in some banter.

I was 6th or 7th in line, a week or so away from Christmas, all I needed was one stamp. I felt the urge to get angry but, believe it or not, was able to suppress the rage long enough to begin wondering why there was only one person at the counter while at least a half dozen people were crowding the lobby behind me.  My fellow friends in line were getting visibly agitated, so I casually mentioned that the employee behind the desk was working hard and could probably use a hand.  There was a visible change in attitude and some small conversations ensued.  Some very nice random lady offered me her stamp.  I was perplexed, overjoyed, amazed at how such a simple act completely made my day.

Yes, but what does it have to do with today’s lesson?  I did not assume the postal employee made the choice to be the only one working at this particular moment in time, what if his co-worker had an emergency or they were shorthanded from the flu, or worse the quad-demic?  I acted as if I didn’t know anything and that is the point of today’s Life Lesson.  If you find yourself in an uncomfortable or difficult situation act like you know nothing.  People will go out on a limb and give you advice and guidance, especially if you are able to make them feel like the resident expert.  Chances are you may learn a few things and gain a sense of hope for humanity.  Give it a try and tell me what you think.  I hope it works and if not, why did you listen to me?  I know nothing.

Interesting take here. I don’t necessarily believe you are being dumb, just aware enough that what is happening to you isn’t what is happening to others around you.

Read closer, never mentioned anything about being dumb, but I think you make a decent point there. Appreciate your feedback.
