Tie Your Canoe Down
This Life Lesson takes a cue from Day Three’s and keeps it short and it is short because today’s lesson is focused on a single word simple. Keeping life simple makes the difficult less so and the easy a breeze. Take for example, when you finally find your long lost camp site after six plus hours of paddling, set up camp and eventually sit down to a delicious warm meal cooked on the open fire. Maybe it’s a hotdog, maybe beans or a baked potato. The food doesn’t matter necessarily, what matters is the simple pleasure of being in the wilderness and savoring the food that has been cooked over an open fire. Even amidst the constant downpour of rain throughout the night, you will sleep well. Until you wake up to the sounds of panic and one of the crew says the canoes are gone.
We were relatively early in our canoe expedition careers when this rookie mistake happened, but we’ve never forgotten to tie down again. How does this apply to real life you ask? We overlooked a routine, basic task because it was so simple. We also enjoyed simple food, cooked simply. Off the river, it means never take the simple things for granted and sometimes the most enjoyable things are the simplest. There is nothing quite like the pedestrian Idaho potato cooked in a campfire and enjoyed lava hot.
The title of this Life Lesson was contributed by fellow Lenten Canoeists Bob AKA J-Stroke. Curious to find out if I nailed or if all the fasting has affected my ability to think.
Tomorrow marks the First Sunday of Lent, this time I want to hear from you. In your life how do you Tie Your Canoe Down? Looking forward to hearing from you, especially if you have ever forgotten to Tie Your Canoe Down.
